What is Botox?

Botox is a the trade name for a substance called onabotulinumtoxinA, a type of botulinum toxin. This may sound scary, but in actuality this toxin has been used for decades to treat a variety of health issues. In small and controlled doses, Botox offers therapeutic benefits. Spasticity, strabismus (crossed eyes), stress urinary incontinence and chronic migraines are all issues that have been successfully treated with this medicine.

How does Botox work?

Botox is injected into the area of concern, where it targets the nerves responsible for signalling muscle contraction and the transmission of pain sensation. This prevents the nerves from "overworking", thereby resolving the particular health issue.

In fact, the wrinkle smoothing effects of Botox were discovered while doctors were treating patients for strabismus back in the 1980s!

To smooth away wrinkles, Botox relaxes the muscles that cause the skin in the area to crease.
To make the jawline less angular, Botox relaxes the masseter muscles so they become less bulky.
For an upper lip flip, Botox targets the orbicularis oris, a muscle that is responsible for controlling the mouth and lips.
To reduce excessive sweating, Botox targets the nerves responsible for signalling the sweat glands to work.

The Botox Treatment

Once a consultation is done to ensure that Botox is safe for you and it can help you achieve your desired results, you'll be able to undergo the treatment.

The procedure takes just a few minutes to complete. The targeted area is cleansed to reduce the risk of infection and then Botox is administered by a series of tiny injections. A topical anesthetic can be applied beforehand to improve comfort.

Once the injections have been made, the area is cleansed again and you'll be free to go.

There are a few things that you may need to do afterward for a few hours to improve the effectiveness of your treatment:

keep the treated area elevated
avoid submerging the area in water or using a sauna
avoid touching the area too much or applying unsanitary skincare products or cosmetics
don't drink alcohol
