Dr. K Dwayne Fulks is a board certified plastic surgeon and medical director of PerfecTenn.
A native of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Dr. Fulks always had a keen interest in medicine because he loved making a positive difference in people’s lives. Based on this passion, he first obtained a degree in Biology and Chemistry, graduating magna cum laude from David Lipscomb University in 1981. He then attended Quillen-Dishner College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, where he graduated in the top 5 of his class and received the prestigious Dean Award for Outstanding Medical Student. His mastery of the subject was also recognized by Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, of which he is a distinguished member.
Plastic surgical procedures require precision and accuracy, as they focus on the intricacies of a targeted area that is often delicate in nature. This is what attracted Dr. Fulks to the specialty, and continues to do so today. He enjoys this hyper-focus on changing broad to minute details with extreme care — and the ability to see the improvement because they’re external. Training in Varied Techniques
Dr. Fulks completed his General Surgery training at the University of Kentucky and his Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Tennessee at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. At Erlanger Hospital, Dr. Fulks was involved in numerous research endeavors that examined, in depth, topics such as facial trauma, cancer and vascular surgery. Much of his fascinating research has been published in national and international medical journals and have contributed to advancements in the field of plastic surgery. He also trained in microsurgery, microneurosurgery, skin cancer reconstruction and complex hand surgery.
In 1991, Dr. Fulks established his medical practice in Columbia. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery, Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American College of Surgeons and Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation. Dr. Fulks is also an Active Staff member of Maury Regional Medical Center and has served as the Surgery Department Chairman, Medical Staff Chief of Staff and Board of Director Advisory Committee. These appointments are indication of his outstanding career as a plastic surgeon.
A Ridiculous Perfectionist
A self described “ridiculous perfectionist”, Dr. Fulks is respected for his meticulous surgical technique and gentle demeanor. This has earned him a remarkable reputation amongst colleagues and patients alike. It also helps that he has leagues of happy patients from around the world!
Dr. Fulks loves serving middle Tennessee. After all, he was born and raised here! He strives to provide you with the advanced medical techniques that you may only find at big city hospitals, but in the down to earth, friendly communities you (and he) call home.
Dr. Fulks is an avid cyclist and cook, and enjoys a number of other activities including oil painting, piano and guitar. His artistic inclinations align with his ability to achieve aesthetically pleasing results for his patients.
Interesting Fact
Dr. Fulks has been doing mission work in Guatemala for years. He performs plastic reconstructive surgical procedures, such as cleft lip repair, genetic hand surgery and skin cancer reconstruction, serving the impoverished. In fact, in 2020 it will be the 27th time that Dr. Fulks will be going to Guatemala! He’s done it so many times that he now considers his work in Guatemala as part of his medical practice.
